Victorville’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment

Victorville is actively implementing programs to enhance sustainability and address environmental challenges.

Recycling and Waste Management

The City of Victorville offers comprehensive residential solid waste services, including trash, recycling, and organics collection. Residents are encouraged to participate in the ‘Right Stuff Curbside Contest,’ which promotes proper sorting of waste materials. Winners receive a $100 cash prize for correctly sorting their trash, recycling, and organics carts. For more information, residents can contact the Environmental Programs Division at (760) 955-8615.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

Anaergia Inc. has commenced deliveries of renewable natural gas (RNG) from its SoCal Biomethane facility in Victorville to Southwest Gas Corporation. This marks the first delivery under California’s Biomethane Procurement Program, demonstrating the city’s commitment to renewable energy solutions.

Water Conservation Efforts

The Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority (VVWRA) recycles millions of gallons of water daily at its main plant in Victorville. The recycled water is returned to the Mojave River, replenishing the downstream aquifer, and is also used in cooling towers at the nearby Victorville Power Plant. Additionally, VVWRA has built two subregional water recycling facilities in Hesperia and Apple Valley.

Environmental Justice Element

In December 2022, the City Council adopted Victorville’s first Environmental Justice Element as part of the General Plan. This element reflects the city’s commitment to reducing environmental burdens and ensuring all residents have access to public goods and services that improve their quality of life. For more information, residents can contact the Planning Department at (760) 955-5135.

Climate Change Risks

Victorville faces significant climate change risks, including extreme fire and drought conditions. Approximately 93% of buildings in the city are at risk of wildfire, and the number of extreme heat days is projected to increase by 2050. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to mitigate these risks.

Through these initiatives, Victorville demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, aiming to create a healthier and more resilient community for all residents.
